HEALTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS INFO

- an internet project initiated by the International Society for Health and Human Rights

Project outline

"Health and Human Rights Info" is a project aimed at making practical information and materials on health and human rights more easily accessible to health workers in the field. The focus will be on psychosocial intervention and psychological care in areas affected by gross human rights violations and catastrophic events. For this purpose we will establish a website with selected texts and information. The website will contain:

  • manuals, guidelines and training materials
  • literature, references and reports
  • links to organisations, centres and institutions
ISHHR has, through our network, access to a great amount of information that would be of interest to health workers and others involved in human rights work. However, many documents are not available in electronic form or are found on different web pages and in various formats. By gathering the most useful information in one place we hope that health workers around the world will benefit. Moreover, experts among our members will be able to review the materials and make sure that everything that is presented on the website is of high quality and up to date.

Contents of the website

The site will contain six main pages:

  • Organisations and institutions.
Links to homepages and websites of organisations and institutions working with health and human rights. Brief presentation of each organisation or institution together with the link.
  • Manuals, guidelines and tools.
Links to selected documents and texts on psychosocial intervention, treatment methods, etc. In the case that the texts are not available in electronic form, we will scan the documents and store them on our server, so that they can be downloaded to any computer with an internet connection.
  • Training materials.
Same features as "Manuals, guidelines and tools".
  • Projects and reports.
Same features as "Manuals, guidelines and tools".
  • Literature and references.
    Selected articles, books, etc.
  • Direct assistance.
On this page, the users can submit questions to the ISHHR secretariat, in the case they need specific help or information that cannot be found in the database.
Project implementation

Project co-ordination. The ISHHR secretariat in Oslo, headed by Secretary General Nora Sveaass, will co-ordinate the project. Any requests and comments should be directed to the secretariat.

Selection of texts and materials. An international group of experts will review all texts and materials that are presented on the website. The group will be recruited from ISHHR members and other health professionals: psychologists, psychiatrists and others with wide experience and expertise in psychosocial work.

Technical implementation. The web page will be based on a database solution with search facilities. We have engaged a professional web agency to do the job.

Finances. The project is financed by the Norwegian foundation Project Mental Health.

Technical details

The website will be a links database. This means that no documents will be stored in the database itself. Rather, the database will contain information about each document and a link to the internet address of the document. For example, if we include the United Nations Convention against Torture, the database will contain a link to the relevant location on the UN website. If the documents are not stored anywhere on the internet in the first place, for instance if they are only available in printed form we will scan the documents and store them on an internet server. The new link to the document will then be added to the database.

Each entry in the database will contain the following information:

  • Main category. Which one of the main pages on the website the link belongs to.
  • Abstract. A short description of the contents written by an expert or the website editor.
  • URL. The internet link.
  • Topical keyword(s).
  • Geographic keyword(s).
  • Language. In the beginning we wish to include documents in English and Spanish. However, documents in other languages may also be added.
The users of the website will be able to find information by choosing topical and geographic keywords and language, or by using search facilities on the site. For example, if you want information about "torture" and "latin america" in "spanish", you can enter this information and the relevant links and abstracts will be displayed.
